Survival of the Fittest

Survival of the Fittest

Every now and then I get motivated. It usually doesn’t last long, but when the feeling comes it can sometimes last over a week! Maybe two. Of course everyone gets motivated at the start of a new year. It just seems fitting that a new year brings a new start and a new chance to start fresh. One of my new year resolutions (pretty much every year) is to get more active and try to lose weight (sound familiar anyone?). So one of the ways that I like to stay active is playing various sports with a bunch of my friends.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the most athletic person in the world, but I do enjoy playing different sports and hanging out. This past Saturday a bunch of us went to Maunawili Valley Park for a night of active sports and a BBQ. We started playing Ultimate Frisbee which transitioned to Kickball then Flag Football, Basketball and then Sham Battle.

Of all the games we played that day the Flag Football was the most intense. We had both men and women playing and from time to time we even had a ringer of the canine variety.

Despite brandishing the red flags Cannon was really on his own team

The great thing about Flag Football is that anyone can play. It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female. In fact many times it’s more advantageous to be a woman because sometimes they’re quicker and can get open more. Case in point, Jennifer may have caught the most balls on Saturday. She definitely caught everything that came her way.

This was common sight all afternoon

Of course that’s not to say that the action wasn’t fast and intense. It was quite the opposite. Both teams wanted to win badly and they played their hearts out. Everyone played with heart and good sportsmanship.

He may have dropped the ball and been out of bounds, but Paul showed a lot of heart that day

This wasn’t nearly as bad as it looked

It’s all about getting the flag no matter what

Or not

Of course it wasn’t all sports all night long. We did bring a grill and cooked up some steaks and burgers. Overall it was an excellent night filled with good weather, great food and fantastic friends. Make sure you make plans to come out to our next sports night!
